Let’s start with the obvious: Turn off your lights when you’re not home or in a specific room. It’s simple to do, but you’d be surprised on how many people don’t practice this.
When cooling your home, keep your thermostat on 78 degrees Fahrenheit and with the switch on ‘auto’. If no one is home, raise the temperature to 82 or 85 degrees.
To heat up your home, keep your thermostat on 68 degrees. Always keep the switch on ‘auto’.
Don’t run ceiling fans unless you’re in the room. It’s a waste of energy and money.
Clean or replace altogether your air conditioner’s filter. Your air conditioner will run more efficiently.
Turn off your water heater if nobody’s there for an extended period of time.
Use your dishwasher instead of washing by hand. It’s easier and uses a third less water.
When using your dishwasher, don’t use heat dry, instead open the dishwasher and let air dry.
Install water conserving shower faucets. It can cut your usage of water by half.
Do not pre-rinse your dishes before placing them into the dishwasher. It’s a waste of water and money.
Adjust the water level on your washing machine to match the load size. Try not to use hot water and run a cold cycle instead.
Clean the lint filter in your dryer. That will allow the machine to run m ore efficiently and it will take less time to dry your clothes.
Check your refrigerator and freezer, make sure they run efficiently. If they’re old, they’ll use up more electricity.
